In case you missed it or have forgotten about the wayward Pirates of the Caribbean series, a new trailer for Dead Men Tell No Tales was revealed today offering our longest look yet at the fifth film.
As you can see above, the film seems to be highlighting that wacky pirate humor that has become the hallmark of this series; for better or worse. Whereas the first teaser made it look like Dead Men Tell No Tales would return to the pseudo-horror and more serious roots of Curse of the Black Pearl, this latest trailer seems to throw that completely out the window.
There is swashbuckling, wacky Johnny Depp antics, one liners falling flat, more wacky Johnny Depp antics, and a bit more swashbuckling for good measure. Oh and a creepy, CGI de-aged Johnny Depp because apparently it worked so well for Robert Downey Jr. in The Avengers that we can now do it in every movie.
Uncanny Valley Johnny Depp aside, the movie looks aggressively fine. It certainly seems a bit better than On Stranger Tides was but I doubt it will ever reach the heights of Curse of the Black Pearl. The music, as always, sounds fantastic and this time is not composed by Hanz Zimmer; instead his protégé, Geoff Zanelli, is taking the reins. So far everything sounds just as pirate-y as we might expect so, if nothing else, have hope for the impending soundtrack.
After literal years of delays (seriously, look up the production history on this film), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales releases in the US on May 27, 2017 and stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Kaya Scodelario, Javier Bardem, and Brenton Thwaites.
Drink up, me hearties, yo ho!
